Economic Feasibility of Iodine Agronomic Biofortification: A Projective Analysis with Ugandan Vegetable Farmers

چکیده

Cost–benefit analysis of (iodine) biofortification at farm level is limited in the literature. This study aimed to analyze economic feasibility applying iodine-rich fertilizers (agronomic biofortification) cabbage and cowpea Northern Uganda. Data on costs revenues were obtained from a survey 100 farmers, benefits that would accrue using iodine elicited consumers’ willingness pay (WTP) for iodine-biofortified vegetables. The cost–benefit demonstrated agronomic as highly profitable effort, generating average benefit–cost ratios (BCRs) 3.13 5.69 production, respectively, higher than conventional production practice. However, projective showed substantive variations gains among possibly due differences farming practices managerial capabilities. For instance, only 74% farmers produce BCR above 1 if they apply fertilizer. Furthermore, sensitivity estimate effect subsidizing cost fertilizer proportion benefit biofortification. Therefore, considered health policy intervention targeting poor vulnerable, could be supported through subsidies lower foods avoid passing price burden vulnerable consumers.

A feasibility study and economic analysis for application of nanofluids in waste heat recovery

This paper presents a comprehensive theoretical, experimental, and economic study on the application of nanofluids as heat transfer fluid in waste heat recovery systems. The research work was conducted in a steel-making complex in which a plate heat exchanger had been used to recover heat from hot process water. The system was theoretically modelled and the effects of using nanofluids as he...

Vegetable Grafting: The Implications of a Growing Agronomic Imperative for Vegetable Fruit Quality and Nutritive Value

Grafting has become an imperative for intensive vegetable production since chlorofluorocarbon-based soil fumigants were banned from use on grounds of environmental protection. Compelled by this development, research into rootstock-scion interaction has broadened the potential applications of grafting in the vegetable industry beyond aspects of soil phytopathology. Grafting has been increasingly...

Tomato fruits: a good target for iodine biofortification

IODINE IS A TRACE ELEMENT THAT IS FUNDAMENTAL FOR HUMAN HEALTH its deficiency affects about two billion people worldwide. Fruits and vegetables are usually poor sources of iodine; however, plants can accumulate iodine if it is either present or exogenously administered to the soil. The biofortification of crops with iodine has therefore been proposed as a strategy for improving human nutrition....

Biofortification of Carrot (Daucus carota L.) with Iodine and Selenium in a Field Experiment

The low content of iodine (I) and selenium (Se) forms available to plants in soil is one of the main causes of their insufficient transfer in the soil-plant-consumer system. Their deficiency occurs in food in the majority of human and farm animal populations around the world. Both elements are classified as beneficial elements. However, plant response to simultaneous fertilization with I and Se...
